Welcome to the Weight, Hypnotherapy and YOU (WHY) Weight Reduction Program (as adapted by Harmony Hypnosis). The WHY Program was designed for people just like you who sincerely want to reduce their weight and are willing to make lasting lifestyle changes to reach and maintain their preferred weight.
The six sessions of the WHY Program were developed by Dr. Judy Pearson, a licensed professional counsellor, master trainer, practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and a master clinical hypnotherapist. Dr. Pearson developed the program based on interviews and therapy sessions with numerous clients who struggled with weight reduction, interviewing people who had successfully reached their goal weight and consulting with nurses, nutritionists, motivational coaches, social workers, counsellors, and psychologists.
You will receive assignments at each session which make up a seventy page workbook over the course of the six sessions. These assignments are intended to complement the work you do with your practitioner. Each assignment focuses on a specific cognitive skill, a mindset if you will, related to successful weight control. Each assignment will contribute to your success, so give each one your full attention and motivation. If you have any questions or concerns about any assignment, be sure to discuss them with your practitioner.
WHY Program Overview
The WHY Program assists clients with the psychological and motivational aspects of weight reduction. It’s purpose is to alleviate compulsive eating and enhance the motivation to exercise and reduce weight. The program focuses solely on these aspects of weight reduction, and on alleviating the client’s current behaviours that are the source of overeating and obesity. It is a solution-oriented, brief psychotherapy approach that focuses on the “here and now” of current behaviours related to food, eating habits, coping skills, and physical exercise. It also allows clients to work at an individual pace.
Every client who completes the WHY programme will reduce his or her weight by at least sixteen pounds (eight kilos) but you must be committed to getting results and results are only possible by completing the program. This is due to the accountability factor. After the second session, you cannot return for each subsequent session until you have lost four pounds (or two kilos). Doing so can mean an interim of about two or three weeks between sessions – sometimes longer – because you work at your own pace. Some clients will complete the program in three or four months while others will take a year. You can also place your remaining sessions on hold if life circumstances mean you are required to take a break.
There is no time limit by which you must complete the sessions. You have a standing invitation to return to complete the program at any time, even if overall fees have been increased since your last session. At Harmony Hypnosis we do not ask for the whole cost of the program upfront allowing Clients to 'pay as you go'. Special concessionary rates are, however, available if you pay for the six sessions in advance. Clients are responsible for reporting their weight accurately.
Lasting Results
The WHY program was designed to give lasting results because when you have completed the program you will know self-hypnosis, have a method for stress management, and have four weight related hypnotherapy CD’s and a Stress Reduction CD, all to provide the skills and tools needed to sustain change over time. You are encouraged to become self-reliant in weight management. In six sessions you will have acquired methods, information and tools that will last for a lifetime.
Session Content
In session 1, “Intake Interview and Introduction to the WHY Program,” you’ll have an interview with your practitioner and get an overview of the WHY Program. The accompanying assignment, “Get the Results You Want: Well-Formed Outcomes for Weight Control,” teaches you how to create well-formed outcomes that are specific and motivating.
Additionally in session 1 we will examine “Reframing Compulsive Eating,” where you’ll complete a process to examine some of your unconscious motives behind overeating, and the assignment helps you examine the difference between “Trim-Slim Thinking versus Fat Thinking.”
You will also receive “Training in Self-Hypnosis,” and the assignment is a series of worksheets, or templates, that help you design your own self-hypnosis sessions in “Learning Self-Hypnosis: The Seven-Step Self-Hypnosis Process.”
Session 2, “Stopping Emotional Eating with Stress Management,” teaches you stress management tools to curb the eating for comfort that sometimes accompanies stress. The assignment, “Stress Management and Emotional Eating,” discusses ways to stress-proof your life, manage stress in healthy ways, and reverse the addiction to emotional eating. The accompanying bonus report, “Boost Your Brain to Curb Compulsive Eating!” gives you brain-health recommendations that may help you improve your eating patterns. You will also receive a Stress Reduction CD.
Session 3, “Making Sensible Food Choices,” is a hypnotherapy session focusing on choosing healthful, nutritious, slenderising foods. The hypnotherapy portion is audio recorded for you to use on your own at home. The assignment calls for you to designate healthful and not-so-healthful foods and complete “A Two-Week Food Diary,” so that you become more aware of your eating patterns.
Session 4, “Creating an Intelligent Relationship with Food,” is another recorded hypnotherapy session encouraging you to eat when you are hungry and stop eating when you are full. The assignment teaches you a step-by-step process called “The NLP Slender Eating Strategy.”
Session 5, “Boosting Motivation to Exercise,” is a recorded hypnotherapy session that revs up your motivation to exercise. The accompanying bonus report, “The Benefits of Exercise,” tells you how exercise can help you and how to get started on a safe, healthy exercise program. The “Mind Management” assignment will help you prepare for session 6.
Session 6, “Pulling It All Together for Lasting Results,” is a recorded hypnotherapy session that encourages you to take your mindset into the future so that the changes you’ve made are lasting. The assignment is called “Keep Going: Make Changes Last, Make Motivation Last.”
Part of your agreement to participate in the WHY Program is that you select a nutrition plan approved or recommended by a physician, nurse, or nutritionist. While you are in the WHY Program, be sure to stick with your nutrition plan diligently, weigh yourself regularly to keep track of your progress, follow any guidelines established by your physician, get adequate rest, and choose an exercise plan to implement by session 5. The task you have undertaken is not easy. It is time-consuming and life-changing, and you are worth it. You have what it takes. Believe in yourself and see the results!
Questions and Answers about the WHY Program
Q: Is the WHY Program Safe?
A: Yes. Safety was one of the chief considerations in developing this program. Every client is advised to have a physical examination prior to enrolling in the program. Additionally, clients are advised to follow a physician-approved nutrition and exercise plan tailored to individual health needs.
Hypnosis, when practiced by a trained, qualified professional, has proven safe and effective in helping people lose weight, with no physical side-effects. Research studies recommend hypnotherapy as an adjunct to medically approved weight reduction programs built around nutritional planning and exercise.
Q: How does the WHY Weight Reduction Program work?
A: The program focuses on the cognitive-behavioural elements of weight control that are most directly related to success or failure in weight reduction. These elements are stress management; food selection; and adherence to a good nutrition plan, portion control, healthy eating patterns, and exercise. Additionally, the program indirectly addresses secondary issues such as personal responsibility, self-nurturance, positive thinking and self-talk, self-imposed obstacles, and motivation.
Q: Is the WHY Program appropriate for any client who is overweight?
A: No, this program is not for every client with weight issues. In general, the program is not recommended for clients who have other serious health problems that need more immediate attention or who have medical issues that might interfere with weight reduction. The program is not for clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is not recommended for clients in a major life crisis or for those who are impaired due to psychotic disorders or active abuse of alcohol or illegal or prescription drugs. The WHY program is not recommended for individuals who maintain unrealistic expectations about weight reduction, have not consulted a physician about their weight-control issues, or do not wish to comply with program instructions.
Q: What if I cannot be hypnotised?
A: Most individuals can be hypnotised to some degree. People are amenable to hypnosis under these conditions:
· They want to be hypnotised.
· They expect good results from hypnosis.
· They have a good rapport with the hypnotherapist.
· The hypnotherapist has cleared all their concerns and answered their questions.
For the rare client who does not respond well to hypnosis, the WHY program sessions may be delayed until the client has the opportunity to practice how to feel comfortable and relaxed with the hypnosis process.
Q: Does the WHY Program really work?
A: There are no weight reduction programs that have a 100 percent success rate. Every kind of program has participants who give up, drop out, lose interest, or regain the weight they lost. With the WHY program, however, there are additional encouragement, persuasion and coaching sessions for a stuck client if required. This means that clients are more likely to achieve success and have a satisfying experience with the WHY program. The program does result in weight reduction for clients who complete the six sessions. (Listening to the recordings is a crucial element to success!).
